The Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP) is a non-profit, community-based organization that serves Toronto’s diverse African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities. The mission of the agency is to reduce the spread of HIV infection within Toronto’s Black communities while enhancing the quality of life of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Our approach to services recognizes that holistic approaches are required as we work with people who are living with, or at risk for, HIV. Black CAP is an inclusive space which provides services to a diverse ACB population that includes newcomers, LGBTQ communities, youth, and other at-risk populations. Position Summary:

The Harm Reduction Peer Educator is responsible for leading the Black CAP street outreach team which includes peers and volunteers. Street outreach will focus on high-risk adults with a history of use and will engage ACB people engaged in high-risk activities.

 

Key responsibilities of this position include:

 

  • Support the delivery of Harm Reduction Outreach in Toronto’s ACB community
  • Conduct harm reduction and health promotion outreach through social media to a wide range of communities of African, Caribbean and Black adults across Toronto.
  • Support the delivery of a drop-in for ACB substance using populations.
  • Support the recruitment, orientation, training and placement of outreach volunteers.
  • Support the development and delivery of Black CAP’s Harm Reduction Initiative and participate in workshop delivery.
  • Provide monthly reports detailing dates, activities, locations as well as the identification of trends related to adult substance using populations.
  • Attend monthly staff and team meetings as well as relevant training sessions, as required, to support the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

We are seeking an individual with the following qualifications:

 

  • A commitment to harm reduction and an awareness of substance use in Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities. Awareness includes employment, volunteer or lived experience in these areas.
  • Comfort conducting outreach, education and the exchange of harm reduction supplies in a range of neighbourhoods across the city.
  • An ability to lead and motivate teams of volunteers and students in conducting outreach and education.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STIs and sexual health issues and the impact of HIV/AIDS in Toronto’s African or Caribbean communities and excellent skills and knowledge of community resources and support available.
  • Ability to accept feedback and take initiative as well as work independently and cooperatively with staff and volunteers in a culturally diverse environment and the ability to work in a sex positive, and anti-oppression focused environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and strong listening skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet targets, deadlines and manage multiple activities.
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point), database, internet and email are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • The ability to speak a language other than English is an asset.

 

This is a non-Bargaining Unit position reporting to the Harm Reduction Coordinator. The position is subject to a 3 month probationary period. We thank all applicants; however only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
