As a community service organization, we rely on the generosity and dedication of our volunteers to provide critical support to our programs and services.  Our volunteers have demonstrated their support for the agency by offering continued hard work and determination. The work that you will be doing will help us achieve our mission and sustain our purpose.

At Black CAP, we believe volunteering is a form of community development. The need for people to have an opportunity to get involved, to work for, contribute to, and give back to their communities cannot be ignored.  When our volunteers become engaged, they are making a statement about their interest and support of HIV/AIDS, and its impact on Caribbean and African communities.

As a volunteer:

• You will gain a greater understanding of HIV/AIDS in Toronto’s Black Community
• You will know that you are doing work which positively impacts the lives of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS
• You will have a rewarding and meaningful volunteer experience.
• You will gain and develop new skills

Our goals:

• To develop, maintain, and continually renew a trained leadership base of volunteer community members committed to maintaining the agency’s ability to reduce HIV/AIDS in Toronto Black, African and Caribbean communities. 
• To provide opportunities for community members and volunteers, to create inclusive spaces for people living with HIV/AIDS, immigrants, refugees and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual members of our community to volunteer. 
• To contribute to individual and community health and well being through skills development and increased experience, confidence and inclusion
• To assist volunteers as they gain knowledge about the risk of HIV/AIDS.
• To help them use the information they gain to act of ambassadors about HIV/AIDS in their communities. 

The following includes the range of volunteer activities available at Black CAP:  

•  Board member - Black CAP is trying to create a responsive and sustainable organization led by an empowered and involved Board which fosters an environment where leadership is mentored. Black CAP is recruiting new Board members who can support the development of the organization and to lead the implementation of the 2006 – 2009 Strategic Plan. Board members are also asked to commit to a three year term. Potential members should have some of the following skills/knowledge:
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Fundraising
  • Finance
  • Governance and Planning
  • Community Development
  • Program Evaluation

• Outreach – Complete outreach at community events, bars, bathhouses, libraries, community centres,and other public spaces.  As well, distribute the agency's resource materials to different agencies in your communities.
• Support and Settlement Program – Volunteers will provide counselling, case management, make referrals to community agencies and provide assistance to this department. Volunteers will also provide home visits, escorting and driving clients to their appoinments and providing translating/interpreting skills when necessary.
• Administration/ Reception - Performing reception and administrative task such as filing, welcoming clients, answering the phone, etc. 
• Education/Prevention -  Assist staff in the delivery of HIV 101, anti-homophobia, anti-oppression, STI education and raising sexually healthy children workshop.
• Fundraising -  Support the fundraising activities at events, mail outs, etc. 
• Site Coordinator Assistant for the Mate Masie – Kwanzaa and Yoga Youth Project -  Provide HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infection prevention education to youth ages 15 to 24, in ways that are engaging, immediately relevant and FUN.
